Doctoral Scholarships and our commitment to research

Nine talents from different areas of study are the beneficiaries of the 2023 PUCP Doctoral Scholarships, an initiative that promotes the generation of knowledge through a series of research incentives.

The nine winners of the 2023 PUCP Doctoral Scholarships were chosen from a total of eighty applicants and, from this semester, they will access a full range of benefits with the intention of training in scientific research. Those selected make up a heterogeneous group and come from different areas of study, but all of them have received the same competitive advantages, such as the availability of the facilities and services of the University, the possibility of becoming part of research groups, accident insurance and an important grant, which consists of the coverage of academic and enrollment fees, by the Graduate School, as well as the monthly sum of S/ 4,000 (four thousand Soles) that will be assigned by the Research Vice-president's Office to each scholarship holder.

The work proposes methodologies where there can be a respectful conversation, on equal terms, between the academic field and ancestral knowledge."

“Such support is not common in Peru,” says Dr. Eduardo Ísmodes, dean of the Graduate School. “With this scholarship, it is possible to have young researchers who do not have to worry about their livelihood and who can be focused on their research,” he adds. He also explains that research activity can pave the way for adequate solutions to problems in our reality. Hence, precisely, the relevance of promoting a system of doctoral scholarships.

Along that same line, Dr. Aldo Panfichi, Vice-president for Research, emphasizes the role played by research and doctoral studies for the development of a society. “One of the conditions is to have students of proven quality, with good potential for research and devoted exclusively to this task. For this reason, the University decided to create a high-performance doctoral scholarship program that exactly provides us with the necessary human capital to meet the research objectives that we propose as an institution at the service of the country,” he points out.

This is a great opportunity. Therefore, the beneficiaries must maintain a strong commitment to successfully achieve their studies and the production of knowledge, which can be translated into articles, books, licenses, prototypes, and various forms of innovation. We hope that this initial group, of the 18 scholarship holders we have proposed for 2023, will meet these goals to continue with this initiative in the best way.”

Work Plan

One of the factors of these scholarships lies in the commitment of the beneficiaries to dedicate themselves exclusively and full-time to the development of their doctoral research. With this constant and rigorous pace of work, they will achieve specific progress in the elaboration of their theses and when receiving significant results. At this point, the nine doctoral students are expected to present a publication accepted in an indexed journal, a presentation at a congress, or a book chapter accepted by a recognized publisher before their graduation. This will promote the dissemination of studies nationally and internationally, always with PUCP affiliation as an institutional support, contributing to strengthening the academic reputation of the scholarship holders.

Getting a scholarship to develop a doctorate in Peru is a privilege since most doctoral students are forced to share their time between doctoral research and their work duties. Looking ahead to the future, we hope that the beneficiaries will maintain the link with the university community, either as professors or as members of research groups. We want them to be well-known researchers for their contributions to the academic world and to the understanding of educational problems.”

Director of the Doctoral Program in Educational Sciences

It is important to note that the deadline to complete the doctoral program is three years, with the possibility of one additional year maximum. It is during this time when scholarship holders must complete and graduate by defending their doctoral theses, thus consolidating their contribution to the advancement of knowledge in their respective areas of study, without losing sight of the fact that research is a dynamic axis in the development of society.

Considering that the scholarship solves the economic issue of scholarship holders and that thanks to it they must be devoted to full-time research, the research work is expected to become an outstanding thesis that impacts not only our field of studies but related interdisciplinary fields."

Director of the Doctoral Program in Hispanic-American Literature

The PUCP Doctoral Scholarships are aimed at graduates of master's programs from national and foreign universities who wish to focus on a full-time doctoral thesis. Thesis statements must be related to established lines of research and be developed in research groups recognized by the VRI, as well as in the centers, research institutes or laboratories of the University.
